Qualifications for working in an office

Postby cocksman » Mon Oct 20, 2008 10:00 pm

I've spent the last few years working in retail but am getting a bit tired of it because I'm not getting too far and am completely bored out of my brain.

Do I need to do any sort of qualifications to work in an office or is it all the sort of stuff that I could learn on the job. I'm fairly good with a computer, can use office and my typing is quite fast - not touch typing but pretty good.

I don't want to be an office dogs body forever but having never worked in an office job before I want to get some experience so I can decide what it is I want to do when working in an office.

If you have absolutely no office experience then it could be a good idea to register with a temping agency and find yourself some work in an office environment for a couple of months. This will give you an insight into working in an office and will allow future employers to know that you have this basic level of experience.

You don't really need any qualifications to work in an office but a basic knowledge of using a computer and using software packages such as Microsoft Office are important. Therefore it might also be useful to gain a basic qualification in computing, such as the European Computer Driving Licence, which proves you can use Word and Excel to a basic standard.

How have you got on? Any luck yet? When i was in my gap year I spent a month working in a friend's office. It wasn't anything too stretching but it got me used to an office envirnonment and basic computer packages. i got paid virtually nothing but it was good experience. If you've got any friends who can get you in, even for a short time, it might help.
